Medically Fantastic

Just came back from the doctor's monthly checkup, and Alhamdulillah, everything is good and well. The doctor was happy with all results and asked me to come back ONLY if I had problems. What a great medical end to the year 2006. Keeping my fingers crossed and hope for only the best for the year 2007. Amin.

Sinful Lunch

I know I shouldn't go and enrichen Starbucks thus supporting the American war, being a Muslim and all, but I just had the most wonderful brew I've ever had in years. This Christmas, Starbucks came up with the Toffee Nut Latte and Frapuccino, and I had the opportunity to try it for lunch today, as an accompaniment to the yummylicious Cajun Chicken Dome.
The Latte is a rich and buttery beverage of sweet toffee and the warm flavors of toasted nuts, blended to perfection with smooth espresso and velvety steamed milk. This festive beverage is topped with whipped cream and toffee flavored sprinkles for a handcrafted touch. Its also available with ice.

Rose Pink

Pink...it my latest obsession. Z610i Sony Ericsson.Comel sangat and agak cool kan?

Movie Freak

I recently realized that I've been watching a lot of movies lately, especially Malay movies, thanks to Mak. She doesn't really enjoy English movies anymore, well, at least quite picky on the ones she actually watches, but very into watching almost all the Malay movies in town. Thank God though that Mak doesn't seem to want to watch Cicakman. The latest I caught was Cinta. Personally, I loved the movie. Kinda reminds me of Love Actually starring Hugh Grant, but in another perspective and setting. I loved the way the film maker weaved everything into place and ended all 5 cinta settings into really good endings. Good endings for me doesn't have to be happy endings, but at least with an ending that would put my mind to rest, knowing what the characters would endure and letting the audience make up their own rendition of how it should continue in its individual lives.

The most recent English movie I caught while being left home alone with Nita (Mak is away with Na on a holiday) was Night at the Muzium, and we both loved it. Funny as hell that the 2 hours went by like minutes! The whole theatre was laughing like crazy throughout the movie, and we both agreed that it was a great comedy movie to end the year. Its already the 28th, another day to go before the long weekend again. Can't wait! I plan to watch Casino Royale pulak (yups...I'm way behind) and go holiday somewhere local with the family.

Recipe 5: Garlic Bread

Well, just yesterday, a friend said that he didn't like the taste, or rather the hardness of French Loaf or Baguette. I used to dislike it as well, until an aunt taught me the secret in making it really soft in the inside, and really really crispy on the outside.

Ingredients:
1 Baguette
100g butter (softened)
3 cloves garlic (chopped or pounded)
1 sprig of parsley (chopped)
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese (optional)
1/4 tsp salt

Method:
Mix the butter, garlic, parsley and salt. Cut the Baguette into 2 (to accomodate an oven). Cut the Baguette across, but not all the way, just to have a wide opening across the whole length (like a sandwich). Spread the butter mixture onto the inside of the bread. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the butter. Run the Baguette (closed) across running tap water (very quickyly, so that only the crust is a bit dampened) and bake for 8 minutes in a 180 deg C oven. Eat it while its hot!

Tip:
1. Leftover Garlic Bread can be recycled into yummy bread crumb. Garlic bread would become crispy inside out after a few hours, so just pop into the blender, till you get fine crumbs. Just coat chicken pieces with egg (add salt and pepper to egg) and coat with the bread crumb. Deep fry till cooked. For a healthier version, just pop into the oven till cooked.
2. For sandwiches, just cut across, spread pure butter, run through tap water, and bake. Cut the crispy Baguette into required length.

Recipe 4: Sandwiches

I feel that the art of food business is always best if you could cook from the heart, and not the cashier machine. I wish I had the time and energy to pursue my sandwich business that I ran few months back, everyday at the office pantry. But that would mean getting up at 5am and sleeping late for prep. Profit was not that good, but the satisfaction of getting the approval from my friends is beyond anything money can buy. Too tired now, so I guess its time to share what I made. Here's 4 of my specialties:

General Ingredients:
Gardenia Bread
Butterhead Lettuce (for a mild taste and long-lasting sandwich)
or Iceberg Lettuce (for a crunchy fresh taste)
Pure Butter

Tuna Mayo Filling:
1 can Tuna in Brine
3 tbsp Mayonnaise (I use Kraft's)
1/2 tsp sugar
1/3 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Egg Mayo Filling:
2 eggs (boiled and mashed with fork till fine)
2 tbsp Mayonnaise
1/2 tsp sugar
1/3 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Method for Tuna and Egg Mayo:
Mix all ingredients, cover tight and refrigerate overnight.

Fried Sardine Filling:
1 small can of sardine (mashed with fork till fine with 3/4 of its gravy)
1/2 big onion (peeled and chopped)
3 cloves garlic (peeled and chopped)
1 tbsp lime juice
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
2 tbsp cooking oil

Method for Fried Sardine:
Heat oil, and saute onion and garlic till golden. In a bowl, mix the mashed sardine, lime juice, salt and pepper. Add this mixture to the sauteed ingredients and fry further, till color of sardine gravy turns orangey from red. Let cool and its ready to use.

Spicy Chicken Mayo Filling:
1/4 chicken
3 cloves garlic (unpeeled and smashed)
1L water
1 tsp salt
3 tbsp Mayonnaise
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
some That chilli sauce

Method for Spicy Chicken Mayo:
Boil chicken till cooked with water, garlic and 1 tsp salt. Remove stock (water and garlic). Let cool, debone and chop chicken meat. Add the rest of the ingredients, except for the chilli sauce. May be used immediately. Top up with chilli sauce when assembling the sandwich.

Method for Sandwich:
I'm sure you know how to assemble a sandwich!

Tips:
1. I like to add chopped 1 small tomato or 1/2 onion to my Tuna Mayo for my own indulgence. Try this!
2. Use freshly ground black pepper. Its makes a whole lot of difference.
3. For an even more complete sandwich, add cheese, cucumber and tomato slices.
4. For parties, I like to cut the sandwich into small triagles or squares, and deco with parsley. You can even be more creative, by cutting out with large cookie cutters.

Sweet 16

(From top to bottom: The Cake, The Glamorous Birthday Girl and her girlfriends, The Chef and her shy niece, and The Shepherd's Pie.) After all the cleaning, and 12 hours sleep, I'm finally up and about to talk bout yesterday's Sweet 16 Birthday Bash. Kids these days...Na looked smashing in her birthday outfit and the food was good (if I have to say so myself) The Chefs (myself and Nita) set out early in the morning (at 8 actually) an started whipping up the menu for the day. Birthday Girl asked for Shepherd's Pie, Macaroni Goreng, Coleslaw, Jello Dessert, Homemade Choc Cake, Drummets and Karipap. Got all that and more, thank to the many many contributions from the aunts that came. Started at 4, and ended at about 8, and all went well. Na was beaming in all the 4 hours, and we're happy that everyone had a good time and went back home with a visibly full tummy. Another accomplished mission for the year 2006, I must say.

Chocolate Grape

I had always admired the way my mom could put together bit and pieces and make it look so grand and beautiful, for so many hantaran kahwin and tunang. Last night, I was actually given the chance to prove myself worthy in that area, and therefore affirming that I am biologically my mom's daughter (hehe...people always say we don't look alike at all). One of my closest friends is getting married to the girl he'd always loved, and I've volunteered (without much sense on the turnout) to make him a grape deco of Ferrero Rocher. It turned out pretty well I think, and even the sis was happy with what I've done, that she booked one for her daughter's marriage (her daughter is about 5 years old I think..haha).

Best part is that I enjoyed every single minute of making the 'grape' and I guess I've unfolded another hidden talent that I've foreseen before. Its not that I've never done these kinds of things, its just that I've only been the assistant to the artist, therefore never having the chance to express (cewah!)

Yummy of the Day...

Yummy of the day goes to....(drum roll).......KFC Zinger Max...Finally, an exagerated looking burger, just like its pictures...Yummy cheese, mayo, Hot and Spicy tender chicken and lettuce...Had that for lunch, thanks to Aida and Lini...Couldn't walk much today...Attack of the blisters...Ouch! So much for new shoes...

Fun Gym

I never thought of gyms or aerobics as fun..Had always been more of an obligation to the dear body that goes through all the eating, laughing, talking, lepakking and sitting down in front of the Catia machine, and very occasional visits to the plant, which would take up about 10 minutes of lenggang kangkong walking..Brisk would take 5..Anyway, I had so much fun last night, when I brought along Kak Bib and Lin as guests..We danced the night away, in Body Jam, Fitness First..Alia joined in half way, and added the fun..By the end of the hour, we were near fatigue, but went on with the steam and sauna room..Bathed later (some of us had to sings la kan, while bathing...hehe) and ended the night with a bored face (such drama queens!!) when the Club Promo Lady was promoting the packages they have..Serves her right, though, since she was kinda acting indifferent anyway..

All in all...Gym last night was unlike any I've ever been before...I'll definitely miss this...

New Year Countdown

Its 1st December already!! Just another 30 days to go for the unfolding of the new year. This year had been so colorful, I just don't where to start. But I think this year has been the most memorable year ever. During this time of the year, last year, I was wondering what 2006 would bring. Its scary OK, having a birthdate like mine this year..060606. Omen indeed for some of the events, but nevertheless strengthens me in every way.

note to self: make a new year's resolution!
